Spring & Washer Quick Install

Q: Why does my machine need a spring & washer on the planetary agitator shaft?

A: KitchenAid stopped putting the spring & washer on all machines a number of years ago as a cost saving measure. It is definitely a needed part of the planetary gear. The spring and washer help to keep the attachments firmly down and incorporating all the ingredients in the bottom of the bowl. Also, it helps prevent side-to-side motion of the attachments, which keeps them from wearing out as quickly or hitting the bowl. The side-to-side motion also can cause chipping of the attachments, which is not desirable.

The Quick Install S&W is an easy DIY project, and a video tutorial is provided to help you put this necessary upgrade on your mixer.

Repairs

Q: I regreased my machine or made a repair and now it won’t run at all, what’s going on?

A: The most common issue related to no power after a regrease or repair, is the incorrect installation of the carbon motor brushes.

Identifying your mixer

How do I find out what model of mixer I have

There should be a sticker on the underside of your mixer with the model number, serial number, and other information.

How do I find out the age of my mixer?

The document below explains how to figure out the date of your mixer. Take the serial number and find the first number. That will be the year code. The next two digits are the week code, telling you what week in that year it was manufacuted.

The remaining digits are the serial number code and don't really relate to dating your mixer.

Or you can use the automatic Date Decoder below. Simply enter the serial number and it will do the rest!

How do I find what color my mixer is?

The last two letters in the model number indicate the color. For instance, RKSM60ER is an Empire Red KSM60 model mixer.
